Slowly moving along Link to heading
Almost eight months ago I wrote about my current degoogle status and what I would like to replace next. I had already been expecting this, but not much has changed since then. 😥
Replacing Google Drive with File Browser Link to heading
Last month I installed File Browser on my dokku instance and although it doesn’t have all the features of Google Drive, it’s more than good enough for my needs:
- copy some files and photos across my devices
- timed links to share photos, files or directories with other people
- multiple user accounts for friends and family
- very small footprint
- receives security updates
Your needs may differ from mine, but here is a comprehensive comparison of online file storage solutions, including File Browser.
What I would like to have with File Browser is WebDAV support. This appears to be a frequently requested feature, though it seems unlikely to be implemented. However, if I ever require additional functionality, I could consider switching to FileBrowser Quantum instead. WebDAV support is currently scheduled on their roadmap for next month.
Using Codeberg’s CI Link to heading
For the few side projects I have (like this site), I use Codeberg rather than GitHub or GitLab. Earlier this month I got granted access to Codeberg’s instance of Woodpecker CI. As a start, my site now gets automatically deployed via Codeberg.
Still planning to move away from GMail Link to heading
Mid January I was at FOSDEM 2025 and took the opportunity to see the talk about Mox and the talk about Stalwart, both all–in–one self–hosting mail–server solutions. I was impressed, what they offer and was considering running a self–hosted mail–server. But running your own mail–server is not an easy task and requires continued maintenance. This article (sorry, but in German and behind paywall) does help to estimate the effort it takes to run your own mail–server. After reconsidering that and also after finding out, that my cloud provider hetzner does not offer DNSSEC (and probably never will), I shelved the idea of self–hosting.
In the meantime I had a look at posteo, proton mail and tutanota. But they all didn’t fit my bill. I don’t want to use some special app to use E–Mail.
I can’t say that I have given up on the idea to move away from GMail, but it seemed more difficult than I thought. 😥
Now a couple of days ago I read this blog post that talks in detail about »Leaving Gmail for Mailbox.org«. This gave me new hope. I still have to figure out if this would work for myself, but I think I should give it a try over the coming weeks.🤞
